A growing number of families on low incomes, who are some of the UK’s most vulnerable households, don’t have the money to adequately heat their homes. The Government is attempting to address the issue with the Energy Company Obligation. Often shortened to just ECO, it’s a scheme that will help UK households lower their energy bills by becoming more energy efficient. We’ve put together some of the most important things to know when applying for a boiler grant with ECO.

Energy Company Obligation (ECO) is a Government initative to help address the issue of fuel poverty amongst the UK’s most vunerable households. One of the measures undertaken to help achieve this is the install replacement boilers and heating controls for those in receipt of income related benefits.

Who Qualifies?

To qualify you must be in receipt of at least one of these benefits:

  • State Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Income Based Job Seekers Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Income Related Employment Support Allowance
  • Universal Credit

You must also have an annual income below £16,010

The ECO Scheme is available to both home owners and tenants but not available to tenants housed through the council or Housing Associations.

Will I have to pay anything?

There may be a contribution required by you if you are a homeowner or your landlord if you are a tenant. This will depend on the amount of funding generated from the EPC and the amount of work that is required.

We do not charge our customers for any of the surveys and you are under no obligation to go forward once they have been carried out. If you are required to make a contribution this will be communicated in writing and the install will be able to go ahead once payment has been received.

If the job requires any scaffolding then this will need to be paid for by you or the landlord. Our installers can arrange this for you and give you a quote or alternatively, you can make your own arrangements.

How do I get my new boiler?

Step 1 - Contact Us

Please feel free give us a call and one of our friendly team will be able to answer any questions you have and qualify you over the phone. Alternatively you can fill out our online questionnaire and one of our team will give you a call within 24 hours should you qualify.

Step 2 - Initial Survey

One of our assessors will visit your home to verify your benefit documents and fill out the initial forms. Please ensure you have ALL PAGES of your benefit documents available for this appointment. Should all paperwork be in order then our assessor will then carry out an Energy Performance Certificate on your property.

Step 3 - Technical Survey

A technician from one of our trusted heating company partners will attend the property to assess what work needs to be done for the install and be able to answer any questions about the install itself. They may some additional forms of their own to be filled out and signed for their own records.

Step 4 - Approval

All paperwork is sent to the Energy Company for approval and this process can take anything between 7-10 days. At this stage the Energy Company may ask for additional information which will be required before the process can move along any further.

Once a funding amount has been calculated you will be contacted to inform you as to whether a contribution is required. If no contribution is required you will be contact to arrange an install date for your new boiler.

Step 5 - Install

Our installers will fit the boiler along with any additional heating controls required. This is usually done within a day but may take 2 days depending on the complexity of the install. Once completed you can now start enjoying your more efficient boiler!
